Besides having good transport and freight handling infrastructure as a tri-modal freight terminal (road - rail - waterway), Krems has the following excellent general infrastructure facilities:

Krems lies on the so-called “Regional Ring”, part of Austria’s arterial road network, which provides direct connections to the A1 east-west motorway and to other sections of the motorway network radiating out from the capital, Vienna. The S33 expressway (to St. Pölten), the S5 expressway (direct to Vienna), and the B37 “Horner” highway which serves as one of the gateways to the “Waldviertel” region, all converge at Krems.

S33/B37A Expressway

The S33 expressway runs north-south and connects the cities of Krems and St. Pölten. It forms an important part of the regional ring and incorporates two bridges over the Danube (one in Krems on an extension of the B37A and the other near Traismauer). This S33 artery provides a connection to the S5 expressway (a direct route to Vienna as well as to the north of Lower Austria in the direction of Brno in the Czech Republic), and to the A1 “Westautobahn” (Austria’s most important east-west motorway). The S33 is of dual-carriageway in each direction and has a permitted driving speed of 130 km/hr for most of its length. North from the Traismauer interchange, there is an extension from the S33 in the form of the B37A federal highway (also dual-carriageway and 130 km/hr speed limit) to Krems.

S5 Expressway

The S5 expressway forms a very important part of the regional ring and a very important connection to Krems. As the former B5 federal highway, it was built to provide a faster connection to Vienna. Now, with the up-grading of the stretch leading into Vienna to a full motorway (the A5 north motorway) and the up-grading of the S3, creating the “Weinviertel Expressway” branching north from the S5 (to Hollabrunn and the Czech border), it provides a much improved connection with the capital and the north of Lower Austria. The stretch of the S5 from Vienna to the Grafenwirth interchange, and its connection to the new Traismauer Bridge over the Danube, is now complete. The next stretch from the Grafenwirth interchange to Krems-East is in the planning stage.

B37 Federal Highway

The B37 “Kremser Bundesstraße” is of great importance for both Krems and the Waldviertel region. It starts in Krems and leads northwest in the direction of Zwettl. This road is particularly important for commuters travelling, not only to Krems, but also to the central commercial region of Lower Austria, and also for commercial organisations as a transport route to and through the Waldviertel region. The B37 is seen as a gateway to the Waldviertel region and is provided with frequent dual-carriageway sections for passing.

Regional Road Transport Network

As the regional capital, Krems is the regional centre of the district of “Krems Land” and is served by a close network of federal and local highways leading from Krems to all points of the compass. Two bridges over the Danube ensure good connectivity with all regions to the south.

Krems constitutes an important rail interchange of Lower Austria. Here the Franz Josef Bahn (Krems-Vienna) and the Kremser Bahn (Krems-St. Pölten) interconnect. There is also a connection with the Donauuferbahn (Danube Riverside Railway) which, in future, will serve as a tourist railway only. Additionally, there is the Port of Krems railway owned by the city of Krems.

Franz Josef Bahn (Franz Josef Railway)

The most important and significant rail transport operation for Krems is the Franz Josef Bahn. This runs from Krems via Hadersdorf/Kamp, Absdorf-Hippersdorf and Tulln to Vienna (Franz-Josef Station). The interchange at Hadersdorf/Kamp offers a direct connection to Sigmundsherberg and further, via Gmund, to Budweis (Ceske Budejovice) in the Czech Republic. The interchange Absdorf-Hippersdorf connects with branch lines to Stockerau (S-bahn No. 4 to Leopoldau/Hollabrunn and further to Znojmo in the Czech Republic), and a line via Ziersdorf to Sigmundsherberg.

Kremser Bahn (Krems Railway)

Railway line 177, which leads from Krems via Herzogenburg to St. Pölten, forms a direct connection to the Westbahn (main east-west trunk line), Austria’s most important railway line. As over many years in the past, large quantities of goods, which have either been transhipped in the port of Krems or produced in the Krems region, are transported on this stretch of line. From the Herzogenburg interchange there is also a branch line running via Traismauer to Tulln.

Hafenindustriebahn (Port Industrial Railway)

The Kremser Hafen- und Industriebahn Ges.m.b.H (HIB) operates the railway service of Hafen Krems (Port of Krems) and the Dynea Industrial Park between the port of Krems and the Krems rail freight terminal, and tranships goods to and from the complete rail transport network. The company also hires out industrial sidings, cranes, transhipment facilities and paved areas to customers. The HIB is 100% owned by the city of Krems. International Airport

Krems itself has no international airport. But the largest airport in Austria, Wien-Schwechat (Vienna International Airport), is approx. 60 minutes by road from Krems. It is easily and comfortably reached by motorway and expressway. www.viennaairport.com

Also, the airport of Linz, Austria's third largest city, is only 100 minutes away to the west and is also reachable by motorway and expressway.
